For our first leadership profile, we are shining the spotlight on Angie Lam, Shenandoah Valley Health & Rehab administrator.
Angie Lam began her healthcare career as a CNA, but her goal was to become an administrator who could make a meaningful difference in the lives of residents and team members. When she joined Trio Healthcare as admissions director at Shenandoah Valley Health & Rehab, she was working toward her B.S. in healthcare administration from Liberty University. Through her hard work and determination—and the mentorship, support and encouragement of the leadership team—she earned her degree.
Although an administrator position was not available at the community when she graduated, the leadership team helped her take an interim role at another community while she waited for an opening. When the opportunity arose, she was grateful to be able to return to the community she had grown to love. Her experience reflects Trio Healthcare’s commitment to hiring from within and encouraging team members to pursue their professional goals.
Motivated to Be a Different Kind of Leader
Those who work with Angie describe her as an exceptional leader who is approachable, involved and genuinely invested in her team.
“I wanted to be the administrator I would have loved to have had when I was a CNA,” Angie shares. “I’m transparent and clear in my expectations and I encourage my team members at every opportunity. I plan themed lunches, fun games and activities and monthly culture events to show my appreciation for everything they do, and to give them a break in their busy day. I have an open-door policy, and my team knows they can come to me with anything.”
Angie believes effective leadership starts with being present. Rather than sitting behind her desk, she spends most of her day walking the halls, ensuring operations are running smoothly, greeting residents and families, attending resident council meetings, joining outings and observing interactions.
Her open-door policy extends to residents and families, too. She wants them to know they can come to her with any questions or concerns they may have, and that their voices matter.
What Makes Trio Healthcare Such a Special Organization to Work For?
For Angie, there are many factors that make Trio Healthcare such a wonderful place to work.
“I really appreciate the family-like environment, and the way the Trio Healthcare leadership team truly cares about every team member and all of the residents and families they serve. It is a tight-knit community, and I know I can bring any questions or concerns to Kelly or Alan or David, and they will really listen,” she remarks.
What Advice Do You Have For Those Who Want to Pursue a Healthcare Career?
“I would tell anyone wanting to pursue a career in healthcare to go into it understanding that it is not just a 9-5 job. You need to have a heart for caring and making a difference in the lives of others. When you have a passion for what you are doing, you look forward to coming to work each day,” Angie advises.
